You'll want to upgrade to FreeBSD-stable or even FreeBSD-current
to get recent pthread additions and fixes (which include pthread_cancel
functionality), please see:
  http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/cutting-edge.html

for upgrade directions, either that or install a -stable or -current
"SNAP" from the ftp sites.
