If you are looking for alternatives to Word's equation editor, what is
the problem with TeX/LaTeX? _That_ is a standard and not in a perfect,
but in the actual world.

My equation editor is GNU Emacs, maybe you'd like TeXmacs:

its port is under editors/texmacs.
