If you have XFree4 installed, set:

XFREE86_VERSION=4

in /etc/make.conf, and dependencies will be handled correctly.

Ports are a great way of maintaining software on your machine. They allow
you to build new software packages on your hardware, in your environment.
A lot of problems can be avoided by using ports. However, it can take a
while to compile some larger projects. If you're looking for a good tool
to upgrade ports (or packages) while maintaining dependencies, have a look
at /usr/ports/sysutils/portupgrade. It works very well.
