I use an SSH client I got from
http://public.srce.hr/~cigaly/ssh/
and it doesn't really require installation. Just 2 downloads that need to
be unzipped. Of course, you could carry a laptop or a PalmPilot or a WinCE
machine (if there's an ssh client for it, i don't know) with you.

You won't need to make the change. Even if you ssh straight in as root.
