Makes me wonder: now that they _know_ the technology to perform the thermal recalibration in background, it doesn't cost the manufacturer any more. So why don't they simply ship all drives this way? Perhaps for the same reason that the company I work for will ship v1.1 or v2.0 of our software, depending on what price you want to pay. Software hoarding in another form.
