It's for consistency.

The split version of the books (Handbook, etc) start with index.html.
So do the split versions of the articles.

Adding a link back and forth between the split and non-split versions is
something that I've been meaning to do for ages.

But then, shouldn't we perhaps also have links to the other formats as
well (PS, PDF, etc...)?

I'm not sure.
