When people speak of home automation, they are very often referring to X-10 devices. See www.x10.com X-10, Radio Shack, and now IBM have been selling a computer interface to the X-10 system for $50 (it used to cost hundreds). Usually, if you buy one of these gizmos, the software only runs under Winblows!! I believe there is a port, but I'm having trouble finding it in the collection. The X-10 controller is mentioned in the release announcement for 3.0R Unix systems measure "uptime" in years, Winblows measures it in minutes.
