FreeBSD includes sendmail by default. It is part of the base system.
What version of FreeBSD are you running? If you are running 4.1.1 or
4.2, then you should have the latest version already installed.

I don't know what happened here. Normally, when you download a tarred
file, you have to untar it and uncompress it.

I started with Linux, but the same thing will apply. 
1) Read anything that you can get your hands on.
2) Don't be afraid of the system. Make backups of important things, and
   then play with it.
3) Ask questions on the lists. The people here are a great resource.
