In your home directory, add a .Xdefaults file.  Below is an excerpt of
mine which allows rxvt and aterm to show color.


#if defined(COLOR)
rxvt.termName: xterm-color
aterm.termName: xterm-color
#endif /* COLOR */
!--rxvt defaults--
[ and so on... ]
