This is a known bug in the current timer code; we are still trying to
debug it.  A dead chicken worth waving is to put 

options		"NTIMECOUNTER=10"

in your kernel config.  You should also pass the details to Poul, as he 
may have things for you to try.  Make sure you tell him you're seeing 
this on an Alpha.
