I have been very happy with the IBM Travan I use.  Got it on sale from their
website, IDE model, about $200 I think.  The tapes are expensive, but if you
rotate backup tapes this isn't much of a problem.  The hardware is a Seagate
mechanism inside, and I tar onto it frequently with no problems.  This is a
budget solution, so your mileage may vary.
