I ran into this exact same problem recently when I upgraded my php version for my linux webserver. It seems that instead of creating the mysql.sock file in /tmp that the mysql was creating it in /var/run/mysql :

# ls -l /tmp/mysql.sock
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           25 Apr 16 00:47 /tmp/mysql.sock -> /var/run/mysql/mysql.sock=

To remedy this problem I created a symlink from /var/run/mysql.sock to /tmp/mysql.sock:

# ln -s /var/run/mysql.sock /tmp/mysql.sock

That command should do it for you.

I am not sure if there is any security issues with this, but it fixed the problem for me, so I was happy. :-)

Good luck,
