I ended up at a very similar stage that you are in. I then did:

cp /usr/obj/usr/src/usr.bin/xinstall/install /usr/bin/install
chmod 555 /usr/bin/install
cd /usr/src/bin/sh
make install
cd /usr/src
make installworld
