2.2.5 sysinstall won't trash /etc/, it'll put conflicts into /etc/upgrade.
But it's not a bad idea to backup anyway.

No, existing files are not erased.

On the pre-2.2.2 boxes, the config file is now rc.conf so they'll need to
be hand-rewired and sysconfig moved out of the way.
