Just FYI... Since it contained a complete package set it will take anywhere from eight to twelve hours for ftp-master.us.freebsd.org alone to transfer the whole thing. Because of the way cvsup works sites syncing with that won't even start downloading it from ftp-master.us until then, sites that use rsync will begin downloading whatever they see when they connect but obviously won't have the whole thing until one sync cycle after ftp-master.us has the whole thing. The same basic scheme applies to the other Tier-0 sites and the sites they feed. The good news is that if packages-4.9-release doesn't change this will be the last big painful transfer. I haven't had an opportunity to time the transfer of just the release/ portion yet. The next beta should give me an opportunity to do that. It's up to you but I'd shoot for more like 24 hours for the announcement because of the impact the packages will have. If the future betas don't include full package sets 12 hours might be possible if your expectations are that only some of the mirror sites have the bits at the point you do the announcement. If you expect the majority of the mirror sites to have it then you should never make the announcement less than 24 hours after posting the bits to ftp-master. -- Ken Smith - From there to here, from here to | kensmith@cse.buffalo.edu there, funny things are everywhere. | - Theodore Geisel |
