As a new user, I am very impressed with the quality of FreeBSD documentation as well as the mailing list adherance to relevant topics of conversation, without "all the crap" that I've seen on many other lists, and I'd like to help keep things that way. That being said, I hope someone can clarify something for me. I'm currently running 4.5-RELEASE, and as I understand it (and have been told on IRC), RELEASE is merely a snapshot of a point in time in the life of STABLE. I have gotten the hang of cvsup to update my sources. I have also learned (as it was somewhat unclear in the Handbook) that I can 'make buildworld' on a RELEASE install and don't need to be tracking STABLE or CURRENT to do this. This wasn't very clear in the Handbook. I have two questions that are somewhat related. Firstly, can I upgrade the system in a "binary way", i.e. without having to 'make buildworld' and install. Is there a way to keep track of and apply updates to *packages* as opposed to *ports*. Second, in security bulletins I have seen mention of such releases as 4.5-RELEASE-p3. Where can I find more information about this? Are these releases "official" (i.e. meant for Joe User) or are they other points in STABLE? My goal here (at least for now) is to run an updated RELEASE until I get the hang of things enough to track STABLE. - -- [!] Justin R.
