Man make reveals the following environment variables: MACHINE and
MACHINE_ARCH. But what you are looking for is a way to create OS
specific Makefiles, which is often done via configure. But euh...
my knowledge of configure and how these files are generated is
pretty close to zero, so I leave that to somebody else to give you
info about that.
