You need to either use startx or have xdm start on boot to get X running.
Trying to get the server to run by typing "X" will not work. :-)

Try looking in the FAQ - there's a whole section (chapter 9) that details
how to get X running on your machine.  If you installed the docs, the FAQ
is in /usr/share/doc/FAQ.  You can also access it at:

I assume you mean X here.  The FAQ will detail how to get X set up and
running.
