Hi,

I am trying to install on an = alphaserver 2001 5/300. But it will freeze with an = error all the time, Debian linux is running well (so the comp. works, I = hope).

I start to put in the freebsd 4.4 cd, booted = from SRM (BOOT DKA600), then pressed return (when the system asked for it befor the kernel starts) and then got the = following message:

unexpected machine = check

mces=3D0x1

vector=3D0x670

param=3D0xfffffc000000606

pc=3D0xfffffc00000537270

ra=3D0xfffffc00000537268

curproc=3D0

The document http://www.de.freebsd.org/releases/4.4R= /hardware-alpha.html has a section which I did not understand (and which might cause the = above)

problems):

>    options    = DEC_2100_A500

>    cpu EV4 = #dependent on CPU model installed

>    cpu EV5 = #dependent on CPU model installed

Is someone out there with some = advice for me what to do next to get my first freeBSD system to run?

Thanks in advance

Sure.. but how are you going to tell (say) SRM 'boot' with a USB keyboard then? Does that work? Or do you have a serial console for the SRM and an USB kb for the kernel? I thought your last sentence was implying that USB keyboards/mice only worked on API systems. In the systems I tested with, I basically had two keyboards. :) Your first sentence above is fine for keyboards (SRM doesn't use mice, so doesn't care), but the second one can be ambiguous. :) > Wilko -- John Baldwin <>< http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ "Power Users Use the Power to Serve!" - http://www.FreeBSD.org/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Mon Nov 19 13:12: 0 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from smtpzilla1.xs4all.nl (smtpzilla1.xs4all.nl [194.109.127.137]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9DE2837B416; Mon, 19 Nov 2001 13:11:57 -0800 (PST) Received: from freebie.xs4all.nl (freebie.xs4all.nl [213.84.32.253]) by smtpzilla1.xs4all.nl (8.12.0/8.12.0) with ESMTP id fAJLBtD9081607; Mon, 19 Nov 2001 22:11:55 +0100 (CET) Received: (from wkb@localhost) by freebie.xs4all.nl (8.11.6/8.11.6) id fAJLBtW05261; Mon, 19 Nov 2001 22:11:55 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from wkb) Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2001 22:11:55 +0100 From: Wilko Bulte To: John Baldwin Cc: "Bruce A. However, the thing that jumps up for me (that caught me when we ported tons of code from the DEC VAX to the Alpha) is that pointers are now 64-bit. A lot of code sometimes assumes that point size == 4 bytes (32 bits). If you are casting a pointer to an int, it might just be incorrect. Is there a gcc switch to force pointer types to 32 bit? Oh, OK. So then he may have gotten screwed if he did a buildworld/installworld during the awk experiment, installed 'bad' awk, then did buildworld/installworld now & got a loader built with the bad awk. Does that sound right? Wilko. If you can get your machine to boot, copy /boot/loader.old over /boot/loader and try rebuilding/reinstalling the loader without bothering w/a buildworld. I've got 4.4-RELEASE running on FreeBSD-alpha with more than one alias on my network interface. I decided to try out routed, and started noticing gobs and gobs of messages: Nov 15 11:38:10 tick /kernel: arp_rtrequest: bad gateway value Nov 15 11:43:10 tick /kernel: arp_rtrequest: bad gateway value Nov 15 11:47:59 tick /kernel: arp_rtrequest: bad gateway value Nov 15 11:58:02 tick last message repeated 2 times Nov 15 12:08:10 tick last message repeated 2 times Nov 15 12:18:10 tick last message repeated 2 times It turns out, this is caused by a bad arp entry: 17:21:33{{ttyq8}pherman@tick}~//> arp -a ns1.sc.omation.com (192.168.128.1) at 0:0:0:0:0:0 permanent [ethernet] rt=200 tick.sc.omation.com (192.168.128.2) at 0:60:97:6e:6e:92 permanent [ethernet] [...etc...] Trying to delete the entry gives me "cannot locate 192.168.128.1", probably because the kernel thinks it doesn't exist becase the MAC addr == NULL... ...perhaps (?) Whatever, it shouldn't be there in the first place. So, I've narrowed this down to when routed it writes RTM_CHANGE of type RTF_HOST in sbin/routed/table.c:725 if (mask == HOST_MASK) { w.w_rtm.rtm_flags |= RTF_HOST; w.w_rtm.rtm_msglen -= sizeof(w.w_mask); } else { w.w_rtm.rtm_addrs |= RTA_NETMASK; w.w_mask.sin_addr.s_addr = htonl(mask); Something is going haywire (64bit issues?) because when I change this to if (mask == HOST_MASK && 0) { it works fine, but I'm sure I'm breaking something. :-) There *is* a sizeof(long) just after it on line 734 which should be a sizeof(u_int32_t), but that doesn't change anything in this case. This obviously works fine on 32-bit architectures, so I'm thinking it's some kind of alignment or sizeof problem, but I don't see it. Can anyone comment on this? -Paul. I've owned a few alpha systems (dec3000/300x, as200, axppci33) but never anything that was very fast. To rectify this, I am hoping to get newer alpha in the next couple of months (maybe 21164 based). I've been looking on ebay and news groups, havn't seen any stellar deals yet, but I'll keep looking. What should I look for? A 164LX? A PWS? I would love to hear suggestions. I want to get at least 512MB memory and hopefully more, so a system that supports cheap memory would be a plus. Also it's gotta have SRM in case I want to toy with du/tru64 again. It issues a command similar to "route change ip ip" for each (but last) IP address of an interface if the route already exists and is different. This results in a changed route with AF_INET gateway, but route's IFA still points to Ethernet device and rt_ifa->ifa_rtrequest == arp_rtrequest. This results in this message as AF_INET != AF_LINK. The message is harmless. This is also reproduceable on a 4.1-RELEASE machine. How to repeat without routed(8): 1. Add IP address to your Ethernet interface: ifconfig rl0 192.168.1.1 alias 2. Create route for this address: ping -c1 192.168.1.1 3. Verify that the route was created with gateway of type AF_LINK: route -vn get 192.168.1.1 4. Change the route like routed(8) does: route change 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.1 5. Watch the dmesg(8) output then repeat "route get" command to see route's gateway changed to AF_INET: route -vn get 192.168.1.1 Cheers, -- Ruslan Ermilov Oracle Developer/DBA, ru@sunbay.com Sunbay Software AG, ru@FreeBSD.org FreeBSD committer, +380.652.512.251 Simferopol, Ukraine http://www.FreeBSD.org The Power To Serve http://www.oracle.com Enabling The Information Age --0F1p//8PRICkK4MW-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Thu Nov 22 8:49:24 2001 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from columbus.cris.net (ns.cris.net [212.110.128.65]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6B37437B405; Thu, 22 Nov 2001 08:48:56 -0800 (PST) Received: from ark.cris.net (ark.cris.net [212.110.128.68]) by columbus.cris.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id SAA89258; Thu, 22 Nov 2001 18:48:48 +0200 (EET) Received: (from phantom@localhost) by ark.cris.net (8.11.1/8.11.1) id fAMGmIb45619; Thu, 22 Nov 2001 18:48:18 +0200 (EET) Date: Thu, 22 Nov 2001 18:48:18 +0200 From: Alexey Zelkin To: alpha@freebsd.org, dfr@freebsd.org, peter@freebsd.org Subject: strtod cleanup (patch) Message-ID: <20011122184818.A44229@ark.cris.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 1.0i X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 3.5-STABLE i386 Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org hi, Few months ago I've tried to get rid of duplicated version of strtod() in our tree (libc/stdlib/netbsd_strtod.c). I.e. remove NetBSD's version in favour of our own more features strtod() for alpha machines. As result I got attached patch. Most of this patch is mechanical merge, but I not sure on types usage correctness (long/int/int32_t) in this chunk: #if BYTE_ORDER == BIG_ENDIAN #define IEEE_BIG_ENDIAN #define Long int32_t #define ULong u_int32_t #else #define IEEE_LITTLE_ENDIAN #define Long long #define ULong unsigned long #endif It was tested against i386 and was working fine, but since it's more related to non-i386 arches I would like to ask you to review and test it. PS: As result of this patch libc/strlib/netbsd_strtod.c will be removed. The #define Long int32_t etc should be used in all cases, including i386. The ia64 and alpha ports are little endian, and work best with int32_t. Also, maybe use: typedef int32_t Long; typedef u_int32_t ULong; .. that way there is no chance of preprocessor side effects with the space in ULong.
