"man cvs", or simply reading the output of the cvs command below, should
have helped you to discover the "-d" option.

> bls2# cvs co -D12-mar sys
> cvs checkout: No CVSROOT specified!  Please use the `-d' option
> cvs [checkout aborted]: or set the CVSROOT environment variable.
