I did run mergemaster (and MAKEDEV)

ruben@ei$ ls -l acd0*
crw-r-----  4 root  operator  117,   0 Apr 28 18:47 acd0a
crw-r-----  4 root  operator  117,   0 Apr 28 18:47 acd0c

but at the moment the problem occurs (mountroot), there's still only the
bootable floppy image on the CD-ROM (with the new kernel, but without 
a /dev directory), so how can this be of influence?
