Connection refused: Is SMTP blocked? may the first host relay to the second (see /etc/hosts.deny and hosts.allow)? Otherwise try to telnet on SMTP port to "localhost.netsyslab.it.rit.edu". Perhaps you have a DNS problem. I've had also troubles like these.
