After switching from XFree86-4 to xorg, my DRI problems went away with my Radeon 7000/VE. I followed the instructions in the HEADS-UP, built a fresh xorg.conf file using xorgconfigure, and DRI works fine for me now. But, I can't get any keyboard events into GNOME now. Looks like I'll need to rebuild GNOME too.
