The X is what matters most:

Win95 -> cleartest passwords
Win98 -> encrypted passwords

you want encrypted passwords, and you probably don't want the Win95
any more. There are two edges that can be weird and it happens to
me every time I set this up and meanwhile I forget what it was.
There is a trubleshooting page somewhere on the Samba.org site
that was extremely helpful to me once. Read and understand 
ENCRYPTION.txt (or what was it's name?). May need to toggle 
between "user" and "share" level access on the client.
