what does:

 >echo $TERM

    give you?

It could possibly be the wrong terminal type --- try the following
at the CLI (depending on which shell)...

csh/tcsh:

    $setenv TERM xterm-color

sh/bash:

    #TERM=xterm-color
    #export TERM
