I have some new info regarding this problem.
Specifically, if 32 or more file descriptors are in use by the X server
(as shown by lsof), xscreensaver will hang the X server (causing the select
loop I described) after accepting a valid password to unlock.
Why the magic number of 32, I don't know, but it's consistent.
