It was compiled and run on alpha it was compiled and run on x86 UP and
compiled on X86 SMP It was seen to run on most of these the last time it
was commited as well before the drive-by backout. Jake supplied the
sparc assembler diff.

It is probably 'suboptimal' for ia64 (at least the ia64 assembler diff
is prabably not making correct use of ia64 grouping, but I think it
should work).. it does at least compile. (well it does since I checked
in a missing patch) I left a patch on pluto1 and forgot to bring it back
to my checkin tree, but I found it withing a few minites. in post
checkin testing.
