It doesn't detect the video at all on my laptop, i.e., I get no output 
from dmest or the kernel that anything was detected.

dmesg | grep -i vesa

VESA: v2.0, 8192k memory, flags:0x0, mode table:0xc07b1ce2 (1000022)
VESA: S3 Incorporated. M7 BIOS

The laptop is an HP Pavilion N5440.
