This is normal for mpeg_play.  From the man page:

NOTES
       The  player expects video streams only. It can handle mul-
       tiplexed MPEG streams (video+audio streams) by  discarding
       the audio.

I have had a small degree of luck using an MPEG music player on the
file simultaneously with mpeg_play, but it is quite difficult to
achive synchronization.
