Backwards compatability with sendmail was a postfix goal, so things like alias files and mail lists and so on keep working without change. This isn't true with qmail, for instance. That makes postfix an easier step than qmail. I don't know about exim. > Any comments / advice would be much appreciated. If you're going to *replace* a mail server, you might want to spend the time to set one up a postfix server on a machine that doesn't normally do mail so you're familiar with the process before you start.
