If you had certain USB components, the system would completely lock up at boot time. If you tested your installkernel before you did the installworld, you could boot kernel.old and run as if nothing was wrong. In a few days, the problem was fixed but until then, they had to unplug their USB components and after the system had booted, they could plug them back in. The sequence in UPDATING is there for a reason. FWIW, Jason removed both obj and src and it didn't help.
