  There are ports available that you can use to set it up:

  /usr/ports/security/cyrus-sasl2
  /usr/ports/security/cyrus-sasl2-saslauthd
  /usr/ports/mail/sendmail-sasl

  It is a pretty nice setup, IMHO. I've never setup pop-before-smtp
though.
