muffin -> donut: broken (same as case 1)

conclusion
----------
i386 -> alpha: broken
otherwise: ok

more info:
----------
o  almost no local tuning in /etc on donut
o  telnet works ok
o  it worked before the upgrade

Is this a known problem?
Does anyone else sees this?
