Does appear to work, although the screensaver 'tab' in the
configuration tool has no icon...

   Can you try this patch-ab, and see if it resolves the problem?  Simply
   drop this file in /usr/ports/x11/xscreensaver/files, and build
   xscreensaver-gnome.
