Both KDE and OO take a phenomenal time to build from ports, especially
on my laptop, but I've never encountered a problem with either.
Installing gnome2 for the first time was more of an issue because of
resident gnome1 software and libraries, but not a major issue to someone
with moderate abilities.

Whoever told you that may have had a bad experience in the past. Ports
is the great benefit of FreeBSD, and one of the reasons I recommend it
to clients over Linux.
