The first thing I do to check sendmail is running is "ps -auxw | grep
sendmail"

Usually that returns something like "sendmail accepting connections on port
25"

In the rare case its not running, I add a line in /etc/rc.conf like
"sendmail_enable="YES", then run "sendmail -bd -q30m" to start it
