I tested your patch as described in

and /dev works for me now. Nice work!

I tested this bug on a 6.3-REL with a 6.2 unionfs (20070213) and it
does not panic.

I tested it on a 6.3-REL with your patch and did also did not panic.

So, from my point of view, it's an improvement.
