Why don't you use vipw. This program is especially dedicated for editing
/etc/master.passwd . Just type vipw as root. You cannot edit /etc/passwd
as a normal user, have a look at the rights:
-rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  35800 Jan 25 09:03 passwd

And one more thing, any changes made to /etc/passwd don't take effect.
