I want to set up peer to peer networking using FreeBSD using RJ-45 and a cross-over cable. At the moment, the system detects my SMC card as ed0, however, what steps do I need to take from here to make it TCP/IP aware? I have a linux book which talks about 'ifconfig' and the 'rc' files, however I don't seem to be having much success with it. If you could give me some pointers or point me in the direction of where I could find this information, I would gratefully appreciate it ! I am new to UNIX, however I know enough to be able to browse around the system and set up serial terminals. However , the networking just has me a little stumped at the moment. I think the work you have done and continue to do on FreeBSD is excellent, and I think it's great that FreeBSD & UNIX is gaining more popularity as time continues. There were some build issues, but you'd have to ask Mark Murray about them (I note that building in /usr/ports/lang/perl5 in -current fails). It probably will not end up in -stable (at least not before there is a 3.0.0-"stable" :-). -- Zach Heilig -- zach@gaffaneys.com A horse without a nose... never wins. First you need a SCSI-scanner. As far as I know the ones on the parallel port do not work. If you buy a HP-scanner you can use "hpscan", it is in the ports and should work fine with almost any by HP. But there is also SANE, a nice programm which can handle many other scanners. It is also in the ports but for most of the scanners you need special libraries. The one which is right for your scanner can be downloaded from SANE's homepage. I installed it with my Microtek ScanMaker 636 and it works fine. But you need a "real" SCSI-card, the ones delivered with the scanner do most not work. I am stuck please help me with this problem. Who on earth sold you a copy of 2.2.1? It's about 18 months old now and things have moved on considerably since then. You need to go find whoever you bought it from, poke them with a sharp stick until they give your money back, then get a copy of 2.2.7 (from Walnut Creek CDROM at www.cdrom.com if noone in your local area has it). I can't recall if 2.2.1 had a separate ATAPI boot floppy or not. The GENERIC kernel config on my 2.2.1 CDs includes ATAPI CDROM support, so I imagine there wasn't a separate boot file for it. You might want to try moving your CDROM drive to be the master on the secondary controller, if you have one. My piece'o'crap Creative drive needed this treatment to make it work back then. Still, the best advice is to ditch 2.2.1 and get 2.2.7. Windows 95 killed my boot manager! How do I get it back? You can reinstall the boot manager FreeBSD comes with in one of two ways: Running DOS, go into the tools/ directory of your FreeBSD distribution and look for bootinst.exe. You run it like so: bootinst.exe boot.bin and the boot manager will be reinstalled. Boot the FreeBSD boot floppy again and go to the Custom installation menu item. Choose Partition. Select the drive which used to contain your boot manager (likely the first one) and when you come to the partition editor for it, as the very first thing (e.g. do not make any changes) select (W)rite. This will ask for confirmation, say yes, and when you get the Boot Manager selection prompt, be sure to select "Boot Manager." This will re-write the boot manager to disk. Now quit out of the installation menu and reboot off the hard disk as normal. You can readily dig through the mailing list archives find the gory details of the previous discussions of this issue; but the condensed version is: 1. Perl5 is not 100% backwards compatible with perl4. It is quite possible that some perl4 scripts will fail if executed by perl5. 2. Perl5 is easily available as a port/package for those who need it. 3. The -stable branch is supposed to be exactly that - stable. Especially as 2.x nears the final release. Upgrading perl would be a gratuitous potentially destabilizing change. There were also some anti-bloat arguments based on the relative sizes of the two installations. Now, 3.0 is a new major version. It is -expected- to include various changes which may break backwards compatability; so it is the ideal point at which to make the upgrade. The theory being that all of the major incompatabilities should be introduced at once, at a major version change. (Hence CAM, ELF, SMP, bind 8, Perl5, etc.). -Pat To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Sep 13 10:32:41 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id KAA24604 for freebsd-questions-outgoing; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 10:32:41 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from gratis.grondar.za (gratis.grondar.za [196.7.18.65]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id KAA24584; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 10:32:31 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mark@grondar.za) Received: from grondar.za (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by gratis.grondar.za (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id TAA16871; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 19:32:01 +0200 (SAST) (envelope-from mark@grondar.za) Message-Id: <199809131732.TAA16871@gratis.grondar.za> To: John Fieber cc: Gary Palmer , FreeBSD Questions Subject: Re: Perl version in FreeBSD In-Reply-To: Your message of " Sun, 13 Sep 1998 10:51:58 EST." Doesn't this mean that this user's home directory is in the root file system. if this is the case then when say the user creates files he is writing to a file in root's subdirectory. and this can never be a good thing 'cos all user files should be in the /usr filesystem? or is this actually a symlink? a clarification on this would be welcome. a final point is when adding a user through vipw how can i ensure that the group is a member of wheel (thereby enabling su access). I know some folk would say why don't I use adduser, this is because i'm trying to see what would happen if i had a lot of users to add to a system, in which case vipw's use of an editor helps. thanx, ghulam To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Sep 13 10:48:06 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id KAA28280 for freebsd-questions-outgoing; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 10:48:06 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from phoenix.volant.org (phoenix.volant.org [205.179.79.193]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id KAA28274; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 10:48:04 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from patl@phoenix.volant.org) From: patl@phoenix.volant.org Received: from asimov.phoenix.volant.org ([205.179.79.65]) by phoenix.volant.org with smtp (Exim 1.92 #8) id 0zIGFa-0001rN-00; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 10:47:50 -0700 Received: from localhost by asimov.phoenix.volant.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id KAA28410; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 10:47:41 -0700 Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 10:47:41 -0700 (PDT) Reply-To: patl@phoenix.volant.org Subject: Re: Perl version in FreeBSD To: Mark Murray cc: patl@phoenix.volant.org, Dean Hollister , stable@FreeBSD.ORG, FreeBSD Questions In-Reply-To: <199809131733.TAA16884@gratis.grondar.za> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG > > 1. Yes, but you have to -find- them all to fix them. The worry wasn't so much about scripts in the distribution, or even ones in the ports and packages collections, so much as whatever other scripts might be in use at customer sites. (Think, for example, CGI scripts...) A minor release, especially a dot-dot release, shouldn't break anything unless it is absolutely necessary to properly fix something more important. That's why the switch to perl5 (and bind 8, and...) was delayed until (well) after -current switched from 2.x to 3.0; and why it will not happen in -stable until that branch also moves to 3.x. -Pat To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Sep 13 11:04:55 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id LAA00678 for freebsd-questions-outgoing; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 11:04:55 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from gratis.grondar.za (gratis.grondar.za [196.7.18.65]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id LAA00657; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 11:04:41 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mark@grondar.za) Received: from grondar.za (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by gratis.grondar.za (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id UAA17014; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 20:03:38 +0200 (SAST) (envelope-from mark@grondar.za) Message-Id: <199809131803.UAA17014@gratis.grondar.za> To: patl@phoenix.volant.org cc: Dean Hollister , stable@FreeBSD.ORG, FreeBSD Questions Subject: Re: Perl version in FreeBSD In-Reply-To: Your message of " Sun, 13 Sep 1998 10:47:41 MST." Sorry, it wasn't intended as a lecture. And while I didn't take part in the previous discussions, I did follow them; and my previous message reflects my understanding of the salient arguments and final result. I'm quite willing to admit that my understanding is wrong. Had it been done a year ago, it probably would have made it into the 2.x releases. But I suspect that if the integration were much more recent than that, it would still have been restricted to -current because of the stabilization issues. (Again, I'm speaking as an outside observer. I could be wrong.) -Pat To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Sep 13 11:30:13 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id LAA08794 for freebsd-questions-outgoing; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 11:30:13 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from gratis.grondar.za (gratis.grondar.za [196.7.18.65]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id LAA08746; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 11:29:59 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mark@grondar.za) Received: from grondar.za (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by gratis.grondar.za (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id UAA17106; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 20:29:25 +0200 (SAST) (envelope-from mark@grondar.za) Message-Id: <199809131829.UAA17106@gratis.grondar.za> To: John Fieber cc: Gary Palmer , FreeBSD Questions Subject: Re: Perl version in FreeBSD In-Reply-To: Your message of " Sun, 13 Sep 1998 13:10:50 EST." IDE Hard Errors? Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG I've been getting kernel error messages relating to one of my IDE hard drives. They started out as missed interrupt warnings and escalated to hard and soft write errors. After the hard errors appeared, I ran fsck... and a couple of minutes later the system rebooted. No log entry, no dump, no nuthin'. The same thing happened several months ago with the drive's predecessor (a 1.6GB WD IDE drive) - ending up in a panic to replace what seemed an unfixable disk. In that case, FBSD reports hard errors and the drive was removed. Since the original drive was under warranty, I was all set to ship it back to Western Digital. After all, the conventional wisdom is that if an IDE drive *reported* a hard error, your drive must be toast because all of the drive's hidden reserved sectors had already been mapped out. WD wants you to run their diagnostic program before you do RMAs, so I popped the drive into a DOS machine and ran wddiag. It said, sure enough, that there were bad sectors. It then asked if I WANTED TO FIX THEM! Uh, okay, I said yes - what did I have to lose? The "bad" sectors went away and the drive passed days of running drive tests. It's been running without a hitch ever since in a Novell file server. My question is this: is there something REALLY wrong here, or is there some facet of FBSD (or the kernel interaction with the drive) that is preventing normal operation? If you look at the message log below, the SAME section of the disk is reported over and over - isn't there a mechanism to map that as bad and never look at it again? Is the kernel disabling any IDE "smarts" that is preventing the drive from doing automatic repairs? Do I really need to down the system, boot DOS and run the Western Digital diagnostics to fix this? If you don't have a /home, create /usr/home, then do ln -s /usr/home /home. You can also try adding users using adduser's batch features. Check out the manpage for more info. To add a user to wheel, edit /etc/group, and append their username to the end of the wheel entry. Separate usernames with a ','. However, I had real problems the moment I turned on Win95 widgets. :) While I assume this is not intentional, the Win95 widget emulation is extremely realistic; apparently in some odd combination with the XiG AccelX product and 3.0-CURRENT of FreeBSD, hangs are frequent. The moment I switched back to Motif widget style, all was well. So if you are using the Win95 widget style, try turning it off. I also found that upgrading my AccelX version helped a lot -- if you are using XiG's product, go to their web page to make sure you have the current version. IDE Hard Errors? References: Sender: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG I had similar problems with a 1.6 WD IDE drive, including fixing the drive and having it run fine for a while - the drive did eventually catch fire and burn to the ground (figuratively). I don't think there is anything wrong with the kernel... Mike Harding Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 11:34:49 -0700 (PDT) From: David Babler cc: freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG I've been getting kernel error messages relating to one of my IDE hard drives. Seems like a giant leap backward to me. I tried to run bad144 on the first disk that showed this problem without success (the table was bad, corrupted or didn't exist - I forget the details now). Also tried badsect with no good result. Heeeeeelllppp! There's "TELNET", which Doug is referring to, which is one of the basic TCP/IP services, and then there's "Telenet(tm)", which is (or was, I think it's defunct) some kind of online service that was used in the private sector before the Internet became widespread. Telenet, from what I've read, seems to have been something a little like Prodigy or AOL. The timeframe here was early- to mid-80's. I seem to remember a brief mention of Telenet in Cliff Stoll's book "The Cuckoo's Egg", which was set in 1985-86. > > Doug White | University of Oregon > Internet: dwhite@resnet.uoregon.edu | Residence Networking Assistant > http://gladstone.uoregon.edu/~dwhite | Computer Science Major > > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Jeffrey Dunitz | Current Job: | orpheus@avalon.net BOFH Emeritus, Avalon Networks | Network Engineer | Iowa City, IA http://www.avalon.net/~orpheus | EXi Corporation | (319) 339-8268 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Sep 13 12:51:05 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA20626 for freebsd-questions-outgoing; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 12:51:05 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from smokies.amnix.com (smokies.amnix.com [207.174.29.6]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA20604 for ; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 12:51:02 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from lbw@cougar.com) Received: from cougar.com (ppp-36.dialup2.den.amnix.com [207.174.29.168]) by smokies.amnix.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id NAA15232 for ; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 13:44:01 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from lbw@cougar.com) Received: from cougar.com (ppp-36.dialup2.den.amnix.com [207.174.29.168]) by cougar.com (8.8.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id NAA04423 for ; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 13:37:34 -0600 (MDT) Message-ID: X-Mailer: XFMail 1.2 [p0] on FreeBSD X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit MIME-Version: 1.0 Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 13:37:33 -0600 (MDT) From: Len Wilson To: questions@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: No Sound Sender: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Hello, I just installed 2.2.7 from CDROM onto a new computer and can't get the sound to work. I'm doing it now -- I've got a static name and dynamic (or so they say) IP. You'll probably need to use a dhcp client of some sort. I'm currently using the wide-dhcp package, although I'm likely to switchover to ISC's dhcp-2.0 package when the actual 2.0 release comes out. In any case, both of these dhcp clients are available as ports and packages under FreeBSD. -- Nate Patwardhan, System Administrator O'Reilly and Associates nvp@oreilly.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Sep 13 14:32:23 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id OAA05834 for freebsd-questions-outgoing; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 14:32:23 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from dan.emsphone.com (dan.emsphone.com [199.67.51.101]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id OAA05821; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 14:32:18 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from dan@dan.emsphone.com) Received: (from dan@localhost) by dan.emsphone.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) id QAA02495; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 16:31:52 -0500 (CDT) Message-ID: <19980913163152.A2431@emsphone.com> Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 16:31:52 -0500 From: Dan Nelson To: wwoods@cybcon.com, Brian Feldman Cc: FreebSD Current , FreeBSD Questions Subject: Re: ssh port problem..... I believe there are now weak symbols in libc.so to work around these buggy programs; try either editing the ssh source files and adding those includes, or updating and recompiling libc. -Dan Nelson dnelson@emsphone.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Sep 13 14:34:38 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id OAA06183 for freebsd-questions-outgoing; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 14:34:38 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from implode.root.com (implode.root.com [198.145.90.17]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id OAA06169 for ; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 14:34:35 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from root@implode.root.com) Received: from implode.root.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by implode.root.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id OAA29591; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 14:30:02 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199809132130.OAA29591@implode.root.com> To: Steve Howe cc: freebsd-questions Subject: Re: Gzipped Execs In-reply-to: Your message of "Sun, 13 Sep 1998 02:53:16 -0800." Are you sure that he erased everything? Or did he just screw something up so that the other OSes couldn't be booted? In any case. Here's what I'd do: - back everything (that's existing on the disk) up. - use Partition Magic to make the partitions. Or, defrag and use FIPS to create a new partition. - be *very careful* not to delete any existing partitions when adding your FreeBSD partition. Don't write anything until you're sure that you've done the right thing. Read the docs in full. - install the FreeBSD boot manager, OR make sure that your Win95 partition remains bootable. You can always boot FreeBSD with a floppy or from a CD-ROM. -- Nate Patwardhan, System Administrator O'Reilly and Associates nvp@oreilly.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Sep 13 15:20:52 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id PAA11806 for freebsd-questions-outgoing; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 15:20:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from cc1.ccms.net (ccms.net [204.96.187.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id PAA11798 for ; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 15:20:50 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from aauu@ccms.net) Received: from ccms.net (ppp37.ccms.net [204.181.93.47]) by cc1.ccms.net (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id RAA17306; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 17:26:20 -0500 (CDT) Message-ID: <35FC453C.560D54B8@ccms.net> Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 17:20:44 -0500 From: Alan Weber Organization: Personal X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5b1 [en] (X11; I; FreeBSD 2.2.7-STABLE i386) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Gary Kline , "questions@FreeBSD.ORG" Subject: Re: sendmail: max message size References: <199809130130.SAA29625@athena.tera.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG You will have problems sending files over the internet if the file is much larger than one meg. Being off by default would break SLP and IPv6 autodetection for address assignment. Certainly, you should be able to turn it off, but the correct place to block DOS broadcast ping attacks is your firewall. Windows 95 also has this assinine behaviour, such that you can't probe a net to see if an address is free, or intermittently to take "snapshots" of active and inactive machines, etc.. The book says the sound is a Crystal Semiconductor CS4232, Yamaha OPL3 (YMF262) and Yamaha D/A converter (YAC512) compatible with Widows sound system and SoundBlaster Pro. KDE works great on it except for sound which is something I'm doing wrong with setting it up in FreeBSD I'm sure. When I cat a file to /dev/audio I can hear a very very faint noise as the file starts to play but no sound comes out. The main volume slider is all the way up in the KDE mixer panel. I tried catting /bin/cat and several .au files and several .wav files and they all do the same thing. If I run the slider up for the microphone in the KDE mixer while playing a sound file I can hear feedback but only while playing a file. It looks like I have the right IRQ/DRQ settings but that's what it's complaining about. Any suggestions on how to get this to work? I have 16 (0-15) bpf entries in /dev. Your mileage may vary. - run dhcp_client ethernet_device - you should be all set! Once you start installing packages you install perl5 if you need it. Personally I'm quite happy to see a smaller number of floppies required to do an install without CD player or cheap network connection. What's in the standard distribution that requires perl? Is it reasonable to suppose that if people want perl they'll install an up to date version from a package, and that perl4 could be removed from the standard distribution? Probably not. at about 270K The win isn't big enough to matter much unless it was part of a general move to shrink the minimal install. I tried installing FreeBSD on my home PC through PPP. I dial in to my company and have to authenticate myself using PAP. Here's where weird things happen. When I dial in, I am connected directly to the organizations's CISCO router, which presents me with a "Username:" prompt. Authentication through this WILL NOT work. Instead, I have to start LCP locally, and authenticate myself using PAP. This is the only way I can authenticate myself. (Which, BTW, took a hell of a lot of tweaking in my current Linux installation). Here's what I did. Boot using the FreeBSD boot disk, go to the part where I need to dial in. set AuthName set AuthKey set log local set phone enable ppp term (starts the terminal) ~ATDT At this point, the modem dials out, and I connect to my office. The problem here is that even though I enabled ppp using the "enable ppp" command, I get the router's "Username:" prompt (which can't be used anyway), and PAP authentication doesn't even start. Is there any way I could override the output from the remote machine, and tell my PC to start LCP / PAP irrespective of what the remote server says? Thanks for any help. Regards, R Sriram, Kent Ridge Digital Labs, Singapore. ____________________________________________________________ BTW: FreeBSD *ROCKS*. It beats other PC OSes hollow. I installed it on my office PC, and it *BLOWS* Linux / windoze to bits. Compilation simply RIPS through, X windows is terrifically fast, networking is really industrial strength, and stability is legendary. A complete kernel rebuild took just 3 minutes on my P-II/266 - compared with the 10 minutes for a Linux recompilation. Thanks a ton for this tremendous OS. Once in term mode, dial the office, and immediately hit ~p to go into back mode (once you get the Username: prompt). This has worked with me in the past, and it should cause both the Cisco router and ppp to start talking ppp. Another thing you can try is to enter set openmode active in ppp. Joe Clarke On Mon, 14 Sep 1998, R Sriram wrote: > Hi, > > Here's the scenario...
