Many system administrators shift the /tmp directory elsewhere to avoid this problem since it's usual to have a pretty small root filesystem, and actually it's preferable to have as little write activity on root as possible. Copy the contents of /tmp to, say, /var/tmp. Remove the /tmp directory. Do: ln -s /var/tmp /tmp to create a symlink.
