The following reply was made to PR kern/17122; it has been noted by GNATS.

The load on that machine is fairly even and light. It has some shell
users, and is our primary machine for handling incoming mail (running
Postfix, which is very resource-efficient). It also runs two squid
proxies. All of these things cause a steady (light) CPU load and a
steady (active) I/O load. Output from iostat and vmstat at this time
(below) is I suspect typical of the machine throughout the day.

BTW, the only significant change that occurred after which I began seeing
the crashes was the deployment of the squid proxies.
