The PnP manpage doesn't need examples -- it's Plug&Pray, remember?  It's
suppoed to take care of itself? ;-)

Your ESS soundcard may not be supported by the pcm driver, and I don't
know what to say about your modem if it doesn't respond even when you *do*
follow the rules. :(  It isn't a WinModem or something like that, but a
plain jane modem?
