AFAIK there's no difference between SATA and eSATA above the physical layer. It's just cabling and some minor voltage range changes (which are designed to work SATA to eSATA, or eSATA to eSATA). Hot-swapping is a SATA feature supported under AHCI. You probably need to switch this on in the BIOS. Some legacy OSs don't support it, so IDE is usually the default.
