I had the exact same problem and this seemed to help for me.

1) Select connection on the LHS
2) In the terminal type string on the RHS change xterm to xterm-color

That's it

Subject: how do I get color using PuTTY?

I don't know if this question belongs on this group or not... but I
wanted
to know how I could get color when ssh-ing to my FreeBSD box using
PuTTY...

The reason I ask is, I use emacs to do some webpage editing and I would
like to have the colors come through my ssh session.

Does this question make any sense?
