Hmm.  When I run this I get:

tiger-3# make
make: Max recursion level (500) exceeded.: Resource temporarily unavailable
"Makefile", line 1: warning: "make -V EMPTY" returned non-zero status
${FAILSTRING} expands to empty string

Any chance you can get a stack trace?
