As long as your USB audio device reports it only supports 32-bit as 
native format, then 16-bit bitperfect won't be possible.

I think in Linux, ALSA automatically does audio format conversions. The 
choice is just if your application has to provide a certain format or not.

Try to look at "top" under Linux while playing something and find who's 
doing the format conversion.
