Seems to me the gcc-2.95.3_2 port you installed is broken in some way,
or is angering GNU autoconf. The reason I mention this:

medusa$ gcc -v
FreeBSD medusa 5.4-STABLE FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE #0: Thu Jan 12 01:50:18 PST 2006 root@medusa:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/MEDUSA i386
medusa$ gcc -v
Using built-in specs.
Configured with: FreeBSD/i386 system compiler
Thread model: posix
gcc version 3.4.2 [FreeBSD] 20040728
medusa$ ls -l `which gcc`
-r-xr-xr-x 2 root wheel 176256 11 Jan 18:45 /usr/bin/gcc
