That part was OK. I simply couldn't find a reason for the use of -fPIC which I've tried to demonstrate with the buildlogs I posted. The build cluster doesn't seem to have a problem without -fPIC: http://portsmon.freebsd.org/portoverview.py?category=&portname=xfce4-notification-daemon&wildcard=
