Yes, I did this before I rebooted the first time. :)

I am back from rebooting and everything works now.
Just for everyone else's sake that may come across
this in the future.  Here's what I did to get up
and going after grabbing a fresh -current tree.

cd /usr/src/include; make all install
cd /usr/src/sbin/mount; make all install
cd /usr/src/sys/conf/i386; config mykernel
cd ../../compile/mykernel; make depend all install
cd /dev
cp /usr/src/etc/MAKEDEV.local .
cp /usr/src/etc/etc.i386/MAKEDEV .
sh ./MAKEDEV all
sh ./MAKEDEV wd0s1a

Reboot and viola.  You will also want to change
/etc/fstab as suggested in the boot messages and
'make world' after you come back up.
