One thing I notice is that all fully-qualified hostnames need to end in a '.'. For example, here is a copy of one of my MX records: clarkeadvertising.com. IN MX copernicus.clarkeadvertising.com. Without that trailing '.', the entry is not valid. You can certainly point hostnames between top-level domains, so the .com -> .ws should not be the problem.
